Hospital Trip

Yesterday was our son's trip to the hospital. P was born with a heart defect and had open heart surgery at 7 weeks old. After that he also had 2 stents put in. Every few years until his heart is adult size, he will have to have the stents ballooned out. It has been 3 years since the last time.

I'm sure you've heard how bad hospital food is! Not only does it not taste good, its not nourishing or healing for you! They offered kool-aid to P, right after waking up from the anesthesia!! Really, really?! Kool-aid!? C'mon! Thankfully P doesn't even know what kool-aid is, so he just asked for water. I decided to make some food to take with us, because I really didn't want him eating food with HFCS, artificial colors, preservatives  hydrogenated oils, soy...the list goes on!

First I made soup for our lunch the day before, with enough for leftovers to take with us. This is based on Comfy Belly's recipe. I make this soup a lot, the kids love it and I knew P would eat it in the hospital.

While the soup was cooking I cut up some veggies to take with us. P's favorite are carrots and peppers! Don't throw away those organic veggie peelings, I freeze them, then throw them in my homemade stock, the last few hours of cooking. I also made homemade veggie dip with sour cream.

Next I made homemade jello with organic juice. P really enjoyed this, even though I didn't add enough gelatin and it didn't gel like I wanted!

Then I made fruit salad, a good mix of vitamin-c fruits (I didn't have oranges, darn!), to help with healing.

Last I made chocolate chip cookies based on Elana's Pantry recipe. I add an egg to these and used maple syrup instead of the agave nectar and use butter instead of the grapeseed oil. Yes, I know these aren't that nourishing, but P loves them and they are grain free, so not all bad!

Here is my trooper! The only time he cried was when we took the band-aids off!

Shaker Eggs!

I spent the other night making shaker eggs! I put beans, rice, marbles, beads, quinoa and a few other things in them. I then glued them shut. I put them in C's workbox, he had a ball shaking them, sorting by color, and counting. L also enjoyed playing with them with C, such a good big sissy! I plan to do more things like this for C's workboxes, although he is only 2, he likes to have "school" to do along with his big brother and sister. I also make it part of L and P's school day to either play or "teach" something to C (for 15 minutes), they all enjoy that!

Blogger!

Well, here I am. Friends have been telling me for years to start a blog. I guess I have something interesting to say...maybe!

Anyway I am a homeschooling mama to 3 little monsters! Kidding...I think! L is 7, P is 4 and C is 2 (currently) and E is my wonderful hubby! We also strive to eat the best we can, with local and organic as much as possible. We follow Weston A. Price and Primal eating styles. We have a small garden on our postage stamp yard with plans for a huge garden when (if?) we move. We buy almost all our produce from the local farmers market in the Spring and Summer, with lots of canning, freezing and dehydrating going on. We also buy all our meat, eggs, milk and a few other things from local grass fed free range farmers. We hope to raise chickens when (if?) we move.

I hope to be able to keep up with this blog and give you a little window into my mostly wonderful, sometimes crazy life!
